1 Introduction

The Sandberg Micro WiFi USB Dongle (referred to as ¡°the adapter¡±) gives you wireless network access via a USB port. The adapter allows you to connect to wireless networks wherever you have access to them ¨C removing the need for cables or installing internal hardware.

 

 

2 Overview

2. LED (behind plastic casing). LED explanation:

  • Off: The adapter is not installed.
  • Flashing: The network card is correctly installed/connected to a wireless router/sending and receiving data.
  • Continuous light 5 seconds: WPS connection established. See section 4.2.4.
  • Flashing rapidly (3 times a second): WPS connection active. See section 4.2.4.

 

 

3 Installation

3.1 Installation in Windows 8

  1. Insert the adapter into a USB port on your computer.
  2. The adapter is now installed and ready for use.

3.2 Installation in Windows 7, Vista, XP

  1. NB: Do not insert the adapter into a USB port on your computer yet.
  2. Insert the CD provided.
  3. Run the file from the path ¡°D:\Setup.exe¡± (where ¡°D¡± indicates your CD/DVD drive).
  4. Select your desired installation language. Click ¡°Next¡±.
  5. Click ¡°Next¡±.
  6. Click ¡°Install¡±.
  7. Click ¡°Finish¡±. The computer will restart.
  8. Insert the adapter into a USB port on your computer once the computer has restarted.

The adapter is now installed and ready for use.

 

 

4 Using the adapter

The program ¡°Realtek 11n USB Wireless LAN¡± was installed on your computer when you installed the adapter in section 3. The program can be opened from your notification area by double-clicking the icon. The program options are detailed below.

4.1 Connecting to a wireless network

  1. Select the ¡°Available Network¡± tab. After a brief search, a list will appear of the available networks within the adapter's range. See figure 1. If the desired network is not shown, you can carry out a new search by clicking the ¡°Refresh¡± button.


    In this example the network with the strongest signal strength is selected.

  2. Select the desired network by double-clicking on it in the list.
  3. If the network you are attempting to connect to is encrypted, the network key can be entered in the next window.
  4. The chosen network is automatically added to the ¡°Profile¡± tab. If you would like the adapter to automatically connect to the selected network from now on, you must select the network under the ¡°Profile¡± tab and click the ¡°Set Default¡± button.

4.2 Explanation of the other tabs

In section 4.1 the ¡°Profile¡± and ¡°Available Network¡± tabs were explained. The other tabs will be explained below:

4.2.1 General

The details of the connected network are shown here. You can also renew your IP address by clicking the ¡°ReNew IP¡± button. This may be useful if e.g. you have trouble connecting to the Internet.

4.2.2 Status

The current status of the adapter is shown here.

4.2.3 Statistics

The connection statistics are shown here. Click the ¡°Reset¡± button to reset the data.

4.2.4 Wi-Fi Protect Setup

This function allows you to encrypt your wireless network with the simple WPS encryption method, provided that your router supports it. If there is a WPS button on your router, you may proceed to section B. Otherwise WPS is encrypted with a PIN code as described in A below:

A. WPS encryption with PIN code

  1. Click the ¡°PIN¡± button.
  2. Click ¡°No¡± in the next window if you do not know the name of the wireless network you want to connect to. Click ¡°YES¡± in the following window if you know the name of the wireless network you want to connect to. WPS compatible routers within the adapter¡¯s range will now appear in a list. Select the router you want.
  3. The PIN code is now displayed on the screen. You must now enter it on your router¡¯s WPS configuration page within 2 minutes. See your router¡¯s documentation for information on how this is done.

B. Push button encryption

NB: This function only works if there is a single WPS compatible router within range of the
adapter. If there is more than one, you must use WPS encryption with a PIN as described in A.

  1. Click the ¡°Push Button Config (PBC)¡± button.
  2. Press the physical WPS button on your router.

The encrypted connection will now be established within 1 minute.

4.3 Status of the adapter

Apart from enabling your computer to connect to a wireless network, it can also be used as a wireless access point through which other computers can access your Internet connection. This may useful if your computer has a wired Internet connection which you want to share with other computers wirelessly.
NB: This function is only recommended for advanced network users.

  1. Click the ¡°Mode (&M)¡± tab menu.
  2. Click ¡°Access Point¡±. The adapter mode has now been converted to access point mode.
  3. Click the ¡°Open Config Utility¡± button to configure the details of the access point on your computer. You may enter the network name and channel here as well as configuring the encryption.
  4. Click the ¡°ICS¡± tab to select the network card on your computer which will be used to share the Internet connection. This is only necessary if you have more than one network card installed on your computer.

 

 

5 Troubleshooting

If the adapter cannot detect any wireless networks in the vicinity, or if a connection cannot be established:

  • Check that the adapter is within range of a wireless router. If necessary, check the signal strength under the General tab. (see section 4.2.1)
  • Check that the security settings are correct for the wireless network you wish to connect to.
  • Try moving the adapter to another USB port.
  • Try renewing the IP address by clicking the ¡°ReNew IP¡± button under the General tab.
  • Please note that you cannot use Windows¡¯ own wireless network software. The software program supplied must be installed and used.
