Sandberg USB 3.0 Boost PCI-E
[Item no. 130-28] Rev. 11.07.13
1 Introduction
The Sandberg USB 3.0 Boost PCI-E (referred to as the card) enables you to upgrade your PC to operate the high-speed USB 3.0 standard. Simply insert the card into an available PCI-E port inside your computer, and then you can connect USB 3.0 devices to the card’s USB 3.0 ports. You can then transfer data at speeds of up to an impressive 5 Gbit/sec, equivalent to 10 times faster than the previous USB 2.0 standard. It is still possible to connect USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices to the card.

2 Overview
1+2) USB 3.0 ports for connecting USB 3.0 devices. The card of course also supports USB devices of older standards.
3) Internal power connector. Allows you to boost the card’s power using the computer’s internal power supply. |
3 Installing the Card
- Switch off your computer and disconnect all the cables.
- Open the case.
- Remove the cover plate on the rear of the computer next to a free PCI-E port. If you are unsure which ports in your computer are PCI-E ports, look in the instructions for your computer or motherboard.
- Carefully insert the card into the PCI-E port so that the metal plate is located where you removed the cover plate. Fasten the card to the computer case.
- Close the computer case, connect all cables and start Windows.
3.1 Installation in Windows
- Insert the enclosed CD-ROM.
- Run the file from the path ‘D:\RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-30160-setup.exe’ (where “D” indicates your CD-ROM drive).
- Windows will now install the driver automatically. Click “Finish” to restart your computer.
The card is now installed and ready for use.
After installing the card, you will find the “USB 3.0 Host Controller utility” option in the Start menu. Here you can find information on driver and firmware version numbers. |
4 Troubleshooting
Check whether the device has been installed correctly in the Device Manager under Windows Control Panel. An “NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller” and an “NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Root Hub” must be installed in the “Universal Serial Bus controllers” group. If this is not the case or if they have been marked with an exclamation mark, you can try the following:
- Reinstall the driver, cf. section 3.1. Alternatively, you can check http://helpdesk.sandberg.it for updated drivers.
- Check that the card has been pushed right into the PCI-E port.
- Move the card to a different PCI-E port on your PC.
- Check that the PCI-E port on your motherboard has been activated in your BIOS. If necessary, refer to the documentation for your PC/motherboard for help.
- Connect the computer’s internal power connector to the card’s power connector. Use e.g. Sandberg item no. 508-22, if there is a SATA power supply in your PC.
If the card has been installed correctly, but the connected USB device/s does/do not work, you can try the following:
- Make sure that the connected USB device gets power if this is required for the device in question.
- Change the USB port.
- Check that any drivers for the device have been installed.
- Connect the computer’s internal power connector to the card’s power connector. Use e.g. Sandberg item no. 508-22, if there is a SATA power supply in your PC.
Have fun with your Sandberg USB 3.0 Boost
